Photography 1839-1940
In August 1839 Louis Daguerre announced that he had made the first photographic process work. His process used a silver coated copper sheet that required development using dangerous mercury vapors to bring out the image. Finally a process was invented to allow the reproduction of people and places without using an artist with paint. Weeks after Daguerre's annuncement, William Henry Fox Talbot announced that he could produce images on paper instead of metal plates. Following their lead, many famous and amature photographers followed to record man and nature. Without these brave adventuresome people recording the human existance, we would have only paintings and drawings to depend on.
The following pages explain each photographic process and offer many images showing photographic styles and techniques.
